ascvid uses libbgrab, a video4linux grabbing library to facilitate easy use of BTTV framegrabber cards through a few function calls. To implement constant throughput and to avoid frame loss delays, triple buffering is used through local buffer copying in a separate grabbing thread.

For more info, consult the libbgrab project page
Here, the "asciigrab" that converts video in realtime into ASCII is used to generate the ASCII image- just start it in a large enough terminal ...

To suit everybody, we coded different players to view the generated files using netscape:

shockwave ascii video player dr1.8 executable, uses Shockwave
shockwave ascii video player dr1.8 source (director 7 file, 12 k zip file Apple and Windows)

!!! The default URL loads a 4 MB text file from the zkm server, so do it only if you
have a fast connection. For those with slow linkups, please change the url to
http://www1.zkm.de/~bernd/ascii.txt (550 k file) or try the java applet below !!!

Java Applet executable(JDK 1.1.5)
Java sources (4 k zip file) !!! you need JDK version 1.1.5 !!!

There is also a collection of text videos from students of the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Gemany who used the programms in a performance. They can be found below, along with the sources and documentation for the event. The hardware used here consisted of a Sony VAIO laptop and a Connectix Quickcam to construct a mobile recording unit, so the programm was altered accordingly.
